Accountant Steps into Sir Alan’s Shoes for School Challenge

November 2008

A partner at Sutton Coldfield based business advisors and accountants Weatherer Bailey Bragg LLP has taken on a new role at a Birmingham school, following on from his success in the role of Sir Alan Sugar in a The Apprentice-style challenge.

Steve Horsley first became involved with Queensbridge Visual and Performing Arts School in Moseley last July, when he took on the role of Sir Alan to tell year ten pupils who had been set the challenge of designing a strip for the 2012 Olympics whether they were “hired or fired”. Now he has returned to the school to act as an interviewer, grilling year 11 students submitting mock applications to various sixth form colleges, before they go through the process for real next year.

Following the exercise, which took place just before the October half-term holiday, Steve said: “I carried out six interviews and was extremely impressed by the high standard of the students who participated in the event. Although the students taking part were understandably nervous, what was apparent from the interviews was their enthusiasm and the fact that they were proud of their school and the achievements they had attained.”

The relationship with Queensbridge is part of an ongoing initiative by Weatherer Bailey Bragg to build links with local schools, to generate interest in accountancy as a career and in the wider business world. The firm is also sponsoring an award at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School in Sutton Coldfield for the AS level sixth form business studies student of the year, which will be presented to Karan Pancholi on 20 November.

Steve said: “We are delighted to be able to support both Queensbridge and Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School in helping their students to acquire new skills and to celebrate their achievements.”

Queensbridge deputy headteacher Helen Reeves, who asked Steve to become involved in the school’s The Apprentice day and mock interviews, said: “Building relationships with local businesses, like Weatherer Bailey Bragg, can only be beneficial for our school. Steve’s input has provided invaluable feedback to the school concerning the development of the students who took part, in addition to helping the students themselves focus on their studies for the future. Working in partnership with professionals from the world of work is invaluable to our pupils.”
